I've only crocheted with acrylic, focusing most on blankets and non-fitted clothing like scarves.  If I ever make an item out of cotton or other natural fiber, like a sweater or doily, do I have to block it every time I wash it?

As far as doilies go, yeah I would block those. I've never had a doily that went back to it's pre-blocked state after washing  Shocked But sweaters... that's a judgment call as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I wouldn't go to the trouble unless it was horribly out of shape.
