Walmart has just started carrying "peach skin" which I've read is popular among doll makers. I keep meaning to buy some but I don't need more fabric for poppets in my stash that I will never use! lol
Also I am jealous your Walmart still carries fabric. Mine did away with it when they remodeled and the others in the area are doing it as well. So if you want that peach skin you should stock up now.

Mummynat Got her poppet I am so happy. The suspense was killing me.

No reason to be jealous for long. Our fabric will be gone in February 2011. They're remodeling then and will go to pre-cut 1/4 and 1/2 yard increments. Great if you're a quilter but terrible if you make clothing or bigger projects like I like.

Then I'll have to drive to hobby lobby, or Hancock Fabrics.

As I use velour, I have never had very good luck with turning fingers, I find that the fabric is too thick to try and turn in such a small area and when I do attempt to turn fingers using velour, I notice that it does fray quite a bit (other than that I don't have too much trouble with fraying). But I am a-okay with paws on my velour poppets...

However, the stretchy faux suede that I bought the other day is perfect for turning fingers, I just used some tweezers to help me in creating a house elf using a pattern similar to the poppet pattern by lootsvele:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/whymsicallotus/719865607/in/set-72157600417995081/. Has anyone ever tried her patterns? I find that I have to expand the patterns quite a bit, as all of the pieces fit on only one piece of paper, but I really like how he is turning out and hope to post him next week when my little sister gets back from Europe, where she has stolen our digital camera to take pictures... What. A. Booger... Wink

For turning those tiny fingers, I use a pair of hemostats. They work pretty well, and I only have to replace a doll's arm every once in a while. I picked mine up in the hunting/fishing section of Meijer (like a Wal-Mart Supercenter...kinda) for like $3 USD. (I think you can occasionally find them in smoke shops, too.  Embarrassed Hey, whatever you have to do for crafting tools, right?)

I totally went to my local convenience store last night hoping to find pipecleaners in their craftish/ school supply section for my elf's fingers and I didn't find any, however, we asked the lady working if they had any somewhere else, and she totally went to the cigarette section and pulled out little tiny pipecleaners... Honest to goodness cleaners for pipes. I never actually knew that that was the intended purpose of pipecleaners! But heck, I totally bought them and they worked perfectly!

I just thought I would share my house-elf that I made. I used a somewhat modified poppet pattern. I made him out of the really-awesome-to-work-with-stretchy-faux-suede... He was my first time attempting needlescultping and I really love how it turned out.

And his link:
