i love the fact that american apparel clothes can be copied with very little effort. especially since i can't really afford to spend $50 on a tube with arm and neckholes. but i CAN afford $1/yard jersey knit (i swear, that was a once-in-a-lifetime deal, and i am so sad that i didn't buy more).

all patterns drafted by me, because i'm awesome.

the initial inspiration. actually, i think this is a shirt. but i really do wear my dresses that short (with tights - shh!).

... and here's what i came up with. obviously, there is a collar - i wasn't a big fan of the vneck - and i shortened the sleeves to 3/4 length. eh? the bottom is wrinkly because i stretched it as i sewed the binding on. when i'm actually wearing it, it has a nice tight shape... and does not ride up over my boo-tay.
the black band is not actually part of the dress - it's just a little belt thing i made with some cotton fabric and velcro. i've been obsessed with these things lately.

here's a close-up of the sweet collar. it was my first one ever!

and another. that's not a hole; it's a wrinkle from me not pressing correctly.

i also made my very own little black dress with some lightweight jersey. it's a tiny bit longer than the red one, and has the same binding at the bottom (hence why it looks so weird on the dressform). hard to see, but the sleeves also have black binding.

close-up of the turtleneck/cowlneck hybrid... thing.

so... what do you think?

That little black dress is amazing! love it!
And i agreed with AA being to expensive! But they have their reasons.

How much do you regularly pay for knit jersey?

I love them both!!  You've done a great job.  I can't wait until I'm skinny enough again to look cute in something like that!!

Yep, I have some that short, too, but I bet you have the better figure for it.  Wink

I really like your red one with the collar. And I like making litle accessory type add-ons out of scraps, too.  Cheesy
