so, i just got a brand spanking new ashford joy spinning wheel from my mom as a "congrats on getting your master's degree" gift + belated birthday gift. the joy is a great wheel, but it has small bobbins and i need to unwind the yarn i spin every 20 minutes or so...

enter the niddy noddy.

i got the idea of how to make it from this website:
and found these instructions helpful:

you will need:
3 - 4 feet of 1/2" PVC pipe. (i got mine from home depot for $1.97 cdn. for 10')
2 PVC slip-on T-joints ($0.64 each) <-- slip-on means NO threads, smooth on the inside.
4 PVC slip-on 1/2" caps ($0.43 each)
dremel tool or hacksaw

1. measure a 15" piece, then 4 x 6" pieces and cut 'em up. (this will make a 2 yd/185 cm measure per loop.)
look at me with my dremel!

2. sand off the edges where you cut the pipe.

3. get all your pieces together:

4. assemble your niddy noddy to look like this:

once you've wound the yarn on, you can remove one of the caps to help slide the skein off more easily. AND, since all the joints are slip-on, you can also pull it apart for storage:

there you have it! for less than $5 and in only about half an hour, you too can have your own PVC niddy noddy.

adjust the centre post length to make various measures for your skeins.

hope this was helpful  Smiley

I made one of these and it's great! as soon as that was finished, i used all my leftover pvc pipe to make a lazy kate to ply with. I tried it out and it works great!
