getting all my little duckies in a row..

So I read the post:  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=200956.0  And thought..hmmm...I could do that bag.

Here's how:

Figured out my pattern and put a paper bag together with blue painters tape (my fave!)

Next, here are the pieces (took the paper bag apart, ignore pregnant belling which snuck into picture):

Then I just put it all together: TaDa!

OK, I know lousy tutorial...the truth is I kind of struggled through this.  I used fabric which is more my mom and MIL's style so I wasn't all that motivated to get it done.  So I wasn't exactly thinking while sewing and ended up taking it apart a few times.

My tips are:  get the pockets down first, remember to attach the straps to the bottom when sewing the bottom on and figure out early what the inside is going to look like.

Inside:

I still have to tack the lining on the bottom and the sides, and I still have to trim all the extra thread and figure out if I'll use a button or a snap on the closure....

I think the next version is going to have a center divider, and a zippered top.

Hope this gives ya all some inspiration!

Nicely done!  I have had just such experiences ripping and tearing!  Whoever receives this bag (your mom or MIL) will love it!  Go out and get yourself some rad fabric and make one for you!

I never would have thought of doing a pattern this way, that's awesome! I've got to add papers tape to my wal-mart list. Smiley

Nice Job! The fabric is beautiful.
Yeah, I'm not sure any of my home-ade patterns turn out fabulous the first time around either. Grin
I also have to visualize it before cutting up fabric.

We're just finishing a large remodel on the house and I've found a million (OK..maybe 1/2) uses for blue tape! Smiley  It works so well on patterns because you can remove it and it tears so easily!

Thanks everyone!  I have to say, this morning it looks better than last night when I was finishing it with my eyes half closed! Smiley  I did make it a bit taller than what the original is...and because it is open on the top, it would have looked better if I used a ribbon of the floral fabric on the top of my lining, just to give the bag a bit of flow...ah well, next time.

Now I need to figure out how to do a center divide for my next one! Smiley

so, any chance you'd want to share the sizes of your pattern pieces? i have three days to make a gift for my future sister in law, and this bag is perfect, but my number skills aren't working so great today...
