There are so cool that I thought I oughta share them here - a friend of mine who sells hand-made beaded trinkets started making these knitted necklaces:

I made knitted things with beads & wire, they look quite different to your friend's pieces.

You thread up your beads, then using 2.75mm needles you cast on 3 stitches, and work as many rows as you need in garter stitch (knit all stitches), placing a bead where-ever you need one. I make bracelets using sterling silver wire (.4mm diameter, round, soft i.e. annealed) with pearls or semi-precious beads - about 30 beads per bracelet, and approx 3.3 metres of wire - and they take about 45 minutes to do. Copper wire with seed beads are quicker, the craft wire I use (ColourCraft 28 gauge) is softer and therefore easier to work than the silver, but you need to thread up way more beads, probably around 80-90 or so.
