does anyone have a suggestion of how to wing these or know of patterns?  the second looks more doable for my experience, i think.

well, for the second one, you could just sew a yoke on top of the original shirt. that's how some western shirts are made.

It's not perfect, but maybe you could try altering New Look 6647.  I'm a novice, but I didn't have a problem with the pattern.
