I found a tutorial here online i can't figure out where it is now - i read these things and really need to bookmark them.

anyways, i made my pattern piece 17"x24"

This is what I ended up with:

the one thing i want to do to it is finish the 2 raw edges with some folded over fabric to make it nice inside.  otherwise, i think it looks good and will make a nice gift.  (i'm visiting some friends i haven't seen in over 4 years and need to have a gift for the guy, my friend, and their 2 kids. . .. )  one gift down. . .. .

found the tutorial!

btw, it really was as easy as the op described!

i forgot to add the strap so that's why mine is attached differently.

What two raw edges?  Are you talking about the lining at the zipper?  If so, just tack it to the zipper tape.

Great job!  Your friend will love it!  I really like the fabric too.

that turned out great!  I'm thinking that'll be the perfect pattern for a 'pencil box' I want to make my son.  Smiley

thanks for all the feedback.  Smiley

this bag is for my friend's husband.  I don't know him real well at all - only met him 2 x over the last 14 years. . . .eeks.

so i thought a toiletry bag would be nice.  i know my dh's is getting kind of worn.  hmmm, maybe i should make him one, too, lol.

right now i'm working on a pretty hand bag/totebag for my friend.  i'll have it finished soon and i'll post it.

i have aspirations to make an american girl sleeping bag complete wtih snap on pillow for the 8 year old and a 'treasure hunt' bag for the 12 year old.

then i really should work on gifts for my 2 aunts,  2 uncles and my cousin - they're who i'll be staying with in the middle of nowhere (i camp on their mountain top.)

the aunts and cousin are VERY crafty people so it's harder for them.  i want to impress them, ya know?  Smiley
