I'm not in Iowa, but I'm in a similarly remote place... Nebraska.  I'm just a few hours from you.   Cheesy

i'm not in iowa either, but pretty darn close!  i'm in the northwest corner of missouri--just a few hours from des moines.  i've been there a few times & almost moved there.  one of my friends is from des moines & loves it.  she can't wait to move back.  if you need to know anything about the place just let me know & i can ask her.  it's where she grew up & she goes back all the time.  good luck!

I'm in Iowa City, so a few hours from Des Moines.  If you find any nifty craft stores in DM, post them!  We are distinctly lacking in funky craft stores, oddly enough, other than Michaels and Hobby Lobby.  Roll Eyes  And really, can we consider those "funky?"

Though, there is Ben Franklin here in Iowa City, which has many artsy craftsy things.  And there's a bead store, Dawn's Hide and Bead Away.  Great selection, knowledgable staff, and they carry materials for lampworking (at least the last time I was there a few years ago) and offer lampworking classes.  I normally wouldn't give Dawn any free advertising, but it's really the best in the area for beads.

I moved to Davenport from West Bend, Wisconsin (Just north of Milwaukee) back in November.

There are a lot of the "typical" craft stores here... Hobby Lobby, Hancock, JoAnne, Michaels, etc, and I love it!

One thing that I really miss is a good bead store. It looks like the closest one is in Dubuque, but if anyone knows of any others, please let me know! In the Milwaukee area I was truly spoiled, with a ton of awesome bead stores.

I'm in Ames but I used to live in Des Moines.  The best thrift stores for clothing are: The Salvation Army on 9th Street and the one (just a few blocks away) on SE 14th Street.  Also I've found lots of cute jewelry at the DAV.

You look so fancy I can tell.

I'm from Iowa!  I go to school in Mt. Vernon, IA (near Cedar Rapids and Iowa City) but I'm from Waterloo, IA.
The person who said they go to UNI probably knows about Mohair Pear which is a cool store with vintage clothing/vinyl/Queen Bee stuff/etc.
