Last week my daughter came to me with a pic of J"Lo in this dress (designer unknown) I just get a pic no details - teenagers, go figure  Huh

Daughter - Can you make this
Mum - Mmmmmm yessssss I think so (haven't sewn a real dress since high school)  But we will do a prototype first.

After three hours of head scratching and no pattern we managed a fairly close approximation of the dress.  Next step to spotlight to purchase fabric which I didn't get enough of and had to go back the folowing day for more. Expensive fabric and no pattern = stress.  But slow and easy won the race and we came up with a very close copy of the dress, even down to the belt, which you can't see very well as she wanted it in the same fabric as the dress and without all the beading (whew - would not have had time to do any beading as well) And most importantly she loves it and is going to where it with pride amongst all the manufactured dresses tonight.

That reminds me of my high school days when I made my prom dress (aka my mom had to sew most of it, even up to the point when I was putting up my makeup and shoes to leave!). It looks fantastic!~

I love maxi dresses!! Can you post a tute on how you figured out your pattern? I'm a novice that grew up watching my mom sew and am now trying my hand at it. However I don't know that I'm ready to draft a pattern yet...so please?  Wink

I hope your daughter wears her hair down and curled, I personally think that will make the whole outfit lovely. I love the dress.

I don't really understand why girls wear their hair up with bare shoulders. I believe it's a fashion no-no. haha. What am I talking about.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, I am rather pleased with it myself.

Hahaha - we had this discussion last night and that is what I thought as well - with so much skin showing at the top a down hairstyle works better. This pic was taken before school not before she goes out.

I can try!!!!

I love the draping of the skirt.  Absolutely beautiful.  I wish my mom (or I) had made my prom dress.
