I've been lurking around crafster for quite a while, but it's just now that I've got something post-worthy!

I finished this bad boy about a month ago:

I wasn't in love with the original pattern (found here:http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/PATTlacey.html thanks to knitty.com!), so I made a handful of alterations. I wanted it to be slightly less airy and much less baggy... it took me several gauge swatches to get to what I wanted, but it was well worth the effort!

I used Alpandina alpaca/acrylic blend yarn on size 8 and 11 needles.

That's great! Would you mind elaborating on your alterations for us? I've always liked this shrug, but, like you, thought it was way too poofy!

I like to do personal swaps now and again.

I knit, crochet, and make stitch markers.

Just pm me if you wanna swap. Smiley

Thanks for your nice comments! As far as my alterations go, lets see: First I knit a swatch according to the pattern. The yarn I used was heavier than mohair plus I knit rather tightly, so it knit up a little less airy than the mohair to begin with. It was still a little too holey, so I tried again making my YOs very tight... it was easy once I got into the pattern, I just gave them an extra tug once I made the next stitch.

When I did all the calculations using the tighter YOs plus my bulkier gauge it would have still been rather poofy, so I just decreased the number of pattern repeats in the round to make the sleeves thinner. I can't remember the exact number I used, but all you have to do is figure out the number of stitches required for your amount of repeats then increase to that number of stitches once your cuff is done.

I hope that all makes sense... it's too much math for my taste, but I'm glad that I figured it all out on paper before I started!

Great job! I love that colour.
