My cat loves to walk along the top of our curtains and is oddly amused by sticking his legs/entire head down between the rod and the wall. Shocked    I need an easy, cheap, and not too offensively big (as in sticking out too far) way to build a cornice.

We built them out of card board at my house.

Make a rectangle the width of your window and whatever height you want.  Then hot-glue strips of cardboard about 2 to 4 inches (or whatever size is the amount you want it to stick out from the wall) on one long edge of the rectangle and the two short edges.

You can hot-glue or staple fabric onto the cardboard to cover it,  and then hang the entire contraption over your window.
