- It's calming.  I picked up my spindle after a long break, and I forgot how it magically wipes my mind clean.

- It's fun!

- It's a time machine!  I lose all track of time.  All of it.

I know! I could be having the absolutely worst day. If I can get in front of Esmerelda (she's a Kromski Symphony) In 15 minutes the tension leaves my hands. In 30 minutes my arms and shoulders relax. By the end of an hour I can deal with anything. Thank God for spinning. I manage not to go crazy and kill everyone.
Maybe we should advocate spinning in prisons a la' Ghandi?

oh, good call!!!

I haven't even thought about naming my spindle, maybe I should?  I decided when I get a wheel, I'm going to name it "Miss Anna Leigh".  Anyone want to guess at the namesake?  Wink

I have an SLR named Mortimer and a future wheel named...now about that spindle.

What I like about spinning is the absolute freedom it offers.  If you want to spin the craziest yarn out there with coils and beads and tiny skulls, you can do that.  If you want to spin cobweb hand-dyed silk, you can do that, too.  You don't have to leave your house and go to a yarn shop to get yarn, you can just think of it and make it and there you go!

I love it because it is so pick up and go.  I can spin anywhere, and my spindle only adds 3 or 4 ounces to my purse.  Watching the colors meld together, and the roving turn into a gorgeous finished product is enough to set my mind at ease and still leave me creative.  Spinning takes thought; not too much, but enough to take the mind off of worries and cares.

It is very therapeutic. The year first I picked up spinning was a bad year and spinning got gave my mind a release from the situations I was in and the mind sludge that results from depression.

It is also much nicer on the writs than other fiber arts.
