I have been trying to get my hands on Wiltons icing gels, specifically black and brown.  Especially black!  I mostly want it for dyeing yarn.  Most of the time I use Kool-Aid (I swapped for it), tamarillo flavour makes a nice light-mid brown, but if you want a darker brown, or black you need to use Wilton's instead.  Oh, and I would occasionally like to use black for traditional cake decorating purposes too.  I have bought black powdered food colouring here in Australia in the past (at a Robin's Kitchen store that used to be in the Brisbane CBD), but I had to use two or three of the tiny tubes it comes in just to make black icing (I started with a can of Chocolate Betty Crocker, not a pale icing by any stretch) and they cost me about $6 a pop.  Not a great result there (the other colours worked well for icing except the red), I have tried to use that type of colouring for dyeing yarn too, but it didn't dissolve or take up well.  That is why I am after Wilton's.

I finally found Wiltons in the cake decorating section in Spotlight, but every store I go to they don't have black or brown.  (I have tried 3 stores in Brissy - Indro, Mt Gravatt and Logan 'cos it is huge)They have yellow, orange, pink, red and always lots of blue.  That will solve most of my cake decorating problems, but not help me with yarn dyeing.  (I have already solved the problem of Kool-Aid not having a good yellow, green or blue, I bought Easter egg dye at Coles, it is intense!)

Has anyone seen brown or black Wilton's at their local Spotlight?   Huh  I asked the lady at the counter, I bet you can guess how that went!  She had not heard of Wilton's icing gels (to be fair, they may not have been in stock very long for all I know), and was not aware that they stocked food colouring in the cake decorating aisle (she knew they had flavouring tho).

I had hoped to avoid buying Wilton's online, it always seems like a good idea at the time, but then ends up really expensive.  But, if anyone knows a supplier, I'll try it if Spotty's don't come through.  I'm also trying to avoid using Dyelon, Rit and the like.  It is not a convenient way to go for small lots of yarn and it is no good for icing either.   Cheesy

Hi, a long-time lurker here!

Have you tried Executive Chef at South Brisbane? They have lots of cake decorating supplies. http://www.execchef.com

There's also a place in the Valley called Taste - they have bakeware, but I'm not sure if they have colourings. http://www.taste-online.com.au/

Good luck!

No worries! Cheesy

I wasn't sure if paste and gel were the same thing? Hope they are!

I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip even if they don't have what you're after - it's a great place to visit if you're interested in baking/cooking!

Wow!  I love that store, everything for my kitchen is coming from there from now on.  I caved in an bought a box with 12 colours in it, so I now have black, brown, pink, 2 yellows, a beige, violet and heaps more.  I think I'll keep the no taste red for actual cake decorating duties tho.  I would have just gotten a jar each of black and brown, but they were all out of brown today.   Undecided

They have Wilton's in spray cans too, how cool is that!  I have never seen or heard of that before, but I know I could have a lot of fun with it.   Grin
