I am the EXACT same way Ezri_B.  My aunt says she will teach me to knit one day, but I don't know that it will help (she teaches knitting at her local college and used to own a yarn shop), I think my main issue is that I knit WAY too tight.
Though my crocheting is actually loose, go figure.

I think, that the monkey is really cute- great job!
 and my problem is even worse- I cant read any patterns! i have to miss out on so many beautiful projects because of it Sad... and I`m Hopeless and totally patternproof . sad, aint it
