You don't even need a cable needle, which is handy if your knitting in public (cable needles have a tendency to get dropped, etc.) There's a bunch of different ways to do it:

Some cable needles have bends to stop them dropping out of the stitches. A straight one is fine. It needs to be the same size or smaller than what you are knitting with, bigger will stretch them if it fits in at all, much smaller will fall out of them if it is straight. A partly straightened out paper clip will work fine.

I've got a couple large size paperclips acting as stitch holders on one of my projects. I was knitting it at work and they were handy....

Try knittys calorimetry! That was my first real FO.... easy stitches, just do what it says and it all works out and you begin to get it.  I find with knitting, doing what they tell you is half the battle, then you start to understand how it all works and fits together.
