this is an idea that has been floating around in my head, but due to my major lack of carpentry skills, I was just going to buy like 20 wooden boxes and paing them the appropriate colours in sets of four and glue/place them into the correct shapes.

I cant wait to see these painted!

I'm totally going to steal this idea to make a mini wall version for my place.  (I don't have the space for another bookshelf, nor the tools/skills for this level of carpentry)

These are seriously so great!  Post pics when you paint them!!

I wouldn't paint them. I'd use different colors of wood stain on the pieces. I think that would be more subtle and less garish than bright paint and/or black. You can use different shades of "natural" stains, or there are stains available in colors like green, red, yellow, etc.

That's just me though, they look great right now and they'll look great whatever you do to them.
