I want to make a dress like this:

Specifically, fitted through the waist with an A-line skirt. I have too many dresses that don't flatter my waist at ALL, and so I never wear them.... any suggestions?

I just saw this: http://www.simplicity.com/assets/3780/3780.jpg
at the fabric store today (and I'm SO going back for it when the dollar pattern sale is on!) It doesn't look exactly like the photo, but it does have nice definition at the waist.

I don't have any specific pattern reccomendations, but I'd say look for princess seams. Those are super flattering to the waist and work well with a-lines.
