Hi Julia,

I've been running a Stitch n' Bitch group just with a bunch of friends meeting once a fortnight after work at St Lees cafe, but it went into hiatus just before Xmas (I recently had a baby, and various other group members had other commitments.) I'm planning to start it up again but I'm not sure which day we'll be holding it - it used to be Wed, but it sounds like that will be a busy day for some people. We have a Yahoo Group set up at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/snb_dunedin_nz/ so I'll post there once things are up and running again if you'd like to come along. It's mostly knitters, but some of us crochet and I think we all do various other sorts of crafts - we were talking about doing some weekend sessions where we can experiment with stuff like beadwork, embroidery, mosaic etc. (the light at St Lees is pretty dim, so it limits doing any fine work - plus we're usually "bitch"-ing heaps, so it's good to have a project that doesn't require too much concentration!)

As for places to go, things to do, Arc Cafe is a tried and true venue for live music and just hanging out. There's a new craft market opened up opposite the Railway Station called Arts on Anzac - I haven't had the chance to check it out yet, but it's run by the same people who used to run the market in Vogel St. I used to sell my hats occasionally at that market, and although they had some neat stuff, it didn't get a lot of people through. The uni market is busier and has heaps of cheap secondhand clothing, lots of people selling their own jewellery etc. there - it's only $15 or so for a stall space, but they only run the market once a month during semester time. Vent in the main street of Port Chalmers is a good place to find handmade beads and handdyed fibres etc.

There is also this shop (which I forget the name of.. I'll go have a look after work) on Princes street (south of the Octagon) which sells all sorts of crafts on commission- I think the rate is 40%... or 25% if you put in some hours working the shop. Oh, and theres a $25 annual fee too. I had no idea anything like that existed down here until I stumbled upon it on the way to spotlight last week!
And Arc is an awesome venue, I think its closed at the moment though. But I'm sure someone will rescue it again, like every year. Tongue
Oh! And Circadian Rhythm on St Andrews street. Thats a good'un too.
