On crochetville, there's a tutorial for a popcorn stitch here:

I've done it and its not turning out right...

The two possibilites are that I'm not doing the stitches into the right chain, or I'm not reading the stitch correctly. <--This is quite likely as I'm not exactly sure what the abbreviations mean and the (    ). So, could someone please explain to me the stitches or perhaps find out what I'm doing wrong? I would appreciate it so much!

I think the parts in the () are just directions to what to do after you skip the stitches.
Where it tells you to skip the stitches count that many stitches then crochet in the next stitch using the directions in the ( ). Then just repeat from the star till you get to the end.

Do consider joining crochetville, you can post your questions there, right in the that  thread if need be.

The parentheses are just a way to say what you will do where.  This pattern says to do 2dc and a sc in the 2nd chain from the hook.
