yes, it would likely be heavy and saggy.  Go for cotton crochet thread -- you can get stuff that's fairly thick like sock yarn.  It's often mercerized which makes it nice and shiny.  I made a crocheted top out of it last summer and it turned out just gorgeous.  I bought my thread at WalMart -- it comes on big spools, about four inches high and four inches in diameter and is usually wrapped in shrink plastic. (for those of you who didn't already know what I was talking about).
