This is one of the first things I have made (that wasnt knit flat) that I didn't use a pattern for.  Well, I sorta made my own pattern but I pretty much just knit until I was happy with it.  Anyways, I'm pretty proud of it even though it is just a simple hat.

Materials:
I used Cascade yarn in black (substitute for something of similar weight if ya want)
Set of 5 US Size 3 dpns
US Size 10  16 circular

With two size 3 dpns cast on 86 sts (I used two needles so that it was a looser cast on.  It seems to have worked nicely).  Split cast on stitches between 4 needles.  Join work in 1x1 (K1,P1) ribbing for 6 rounds.

Next round:  Switch to size 10 circular and knit
Next round:  Work stitch as follows
Round 1:  *yo, p2tog* to end of round
Round 2:  knit to end of round
Round 3:  knit to end of round

Work the stitch until hat measures 7-8 inches (including ribbing)

Next round:  k2tog to end
Next round:  k2tog to end

Cut yarn leaving 10-15 tail and thread through remaining sts to close hole.  Weave in ends.

Thanks for all the kind words!  Um, I don't know what the stitch is called or if it even has a name.  I just started knitting and thats what came out.  Here's what I did for the stitch:

R1: *yo, p2tog* to end of round
R2: knit to end of round
R3: knit to end of round
rep. 1-3

I'll write up a pattern for the hat today and post it.

I love this hat! I wonder if it could be modified, though? See, the whole point of circular knitting, for me, is that I don't have to do any purl stitches. Because I hate doing them. I wonder if you could do this pattern as a yo, k2tog stitch, and then turn it inside out? Would that be the same thing? What do you all think?

I've never used Cascade so I'm not familiar with it.  What is the weight of the yarn you used?  Thanks!

I used Cascade 220 and that stuff is worsted weight.  I made another with red heart acrylic worsted weight and it worked too.

Did you use a whole skein?

Nope.  I bought the cascade skein to do some colorwork on another hat and I barely used any of it and then I used the same skein for this hat and I still have some left over.

I tried that and it doesn't look the same.  Plus you'd have to change all the knits to purls and the purls to knit if you wanted to do it that way.  I taught myself to do continential so the purls were alot easier.  Unless you're already continental...then it wouold still be the same.

But, I have since made the hat following the same basic pattern but using a different stitch pattern (adding 1 CO stitch if the pattern needs odd number of stitches).  So you could use any stitch you want.

i really loved this hat! i whipped it up in about 3 hours. i thought i was running out of yarn because i was using a ball of debbie bliss cashmerino aran, so i finished it up a little early, but i still really love it! here's some pics.

like i said its debbie bliss cashmerino aran, in a magenta. i have worn it a lot, and gotten a lot of compliments! awesome! thanks for the pattern!
