My Nan gave me an old knitting bag which was plastic lined and so filthy. But it had these beautiful old handles.... so i unpicked the crusty old fabric and used it to make a pattern, painted the handles and used two materials from Nan's stash (which seemed made for each other) and voila! I love it.

Ooh, I love this fabric.  I also really love the shape of the bag.  I've been meaning to make a bag using handles for a while now, but so far, I'm too chicken.  Tongue Great job!

That bag is fabulous! I love the colors and the pockets, especially with the green piping!

That is a bag that I would pick up in a shop and want to buy!

Thank you all for the lovely comments! I'm keen to make some more if I can find similar handles. The only problem I found is that you have to keep hold of the handles all the time (ie no slinging over the shoulder) which is fine at work, but not when you're trying to wrangle a slippery two-year-old...

Awesome bag!  That fabric goes perfectly with the handles.

Any chance of a tutorial??  Please... I have a pair of handles similar to those that I've had sitting around for ages, and I haven't been able to find a pattern like this.

I think I could have a go at a tutorial... it may take a little time though!

I was going to do a tute for this, but I found one that is 1. already done, and 2. even better than mine! http://u-handbag.typepad.com/uhandblog/2007/03/silk_pleated_da.html. The lady, Lisa,  who has done this tutorial is extremely talented in my opinion and has used the most beautiful silk to make a very similar bag to my lil' 'ole baggie. And she has heaps of other great bag-type tutorials on the site. Enjoy!
