I have been going back and forth in an internal debate in my head as to what stitch this is.  Is it knit or crochet?  Is it crocheted sideways?

Thanks craftsters!

I want to say from the uniformity of the stitch columns that it's tunisian crochet, but it's such bulky yarn I can't tell. hmm... It looks vaugely like simple stitch..

Are you certain it's crocheted? If it is, I would also say some form of tunisian.

Here are a couple pics of tunisian crochet, for reference.

I would also say that the yarn is some sort of thick-and-thin, so that would add to the texture too.

Hmm, I'd bet that looks like half double crochet worked in the round, with the "wrong" side turned out.  I've often thought that side looked as nice as the "right" side.

Thanks for the pics Amalas.  As I look more and more at it, you may all be right on the tunisian thing.  I was thinking crochet at first due to the stitch format, but the stitch uniformity and the edge above the eyes looked more like knitting and a knit bind-off, and a crochet stitch is flatter, not poofy looking like these stitches.

Stitch Diva http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=40 has a really good tutorial for Tunisian.

I just bought some (6) bulky yarn (Some yummy Blue Sky Bulky, 50% Alpaca!) and am trying out some stitches. I will let you know!  Thanks so much you crafties!

Er, I should have said single crochet on the wrong side. I happened to have superchunky yarn that I've been trying to make a hat with, and I liked the hat in this thread, so I swatched a few rounds.  Here's the result (the top row is in hdc; everything else is sc):

Looks a bit different because my yarn is a kind of stiff three-ply, not a spongy single ply.  But if you notice the lower border, it looks just like the gray hat.  That's just the back of a single crochet...

Er, SC does make a lot more sense.

You swatch looks great.  I did some swatching last night, and of course there was no battery left in my camera at 11:00 last night when I went to take picture.

Also, to give credit where credit is due, here is the hat's website, Free People.

Rina, your crocheting instead of doing taxes?  I saw a Turbo Tax cd in your pic.

Ooooh... I think I may have to agree with rina on this one...  Thanks for the swatch!

What I find amusing though, is that the website calls it a "handknit" hat.   Wink

One thing you have to know about manufacturers is they often mix up knit and crochet. It really ticks me off sometimes. If they're selling it, they should know what it is!
