So etsy.com is having a contest where you take stuff that someone would discard and upcycle it; that is, you make it more valuable than its original worth. Here was my entry! i love pennies so i made this necklace for the contest:

And here is a detail shot:

let me know what you think!

PS it's not illegal:

No, it's not illegal.  Go to the US Government Mint website.  It's section 331, title 18 that concerns defacing monies.

wow! i really really do love it. it's a little big so i probably would never ever be able to wear it but if you were to make a miniature version with something smaller i would totally buy/wear it all the time! great job!

wow thanks guys for your comments Smiley

it actually looks even better on a person (my model is super skinny-- she has no back -- so she doesn't fill it out well). and it doesn't quite touch a real person's boob (at least it doesn't reach mine).

about turning skin green... thanks for bringing it up! i didn't think of that as pennies that i've worn haven't stained my skin but i'm thinking that coating the backs might help? i'll research it.

I really like the asymmetrical shape.

How long did this take you? It must have been a lot of work to drill all those holes..

i think it's absolutely beautiful!

how do you go about making something like that?  i'm totally inept when it comes to jewelry making, but i'd love to learn this someday!

i'm hitting the "this rocks" button for sure!

It took me about 5-6 hours total and three drill bits (i kept breaking them!) i didn't think it would take too long to string them together but i guess that took another hour.

scatter - the entire necklace is just made with jump rings (those have a break in them to string them together) and drilled pennies so it's not too difficult to figure out. i just designed it flat first, tried to figure out how it would look with the contours on my neck and then started putting it together Smiley
