I am knitting a scarf for my 4 year old niece. Not sure about how long it should be. I've only knitted scarves for myself in which case, I just put it around my neck and decide how long I want it. But I am clueless for a child's scarf. Are there any standards for scarf lengths?

I don't think there are standards, but for safety a child's scarf should be short enough to be worn under the coat, not over it. Living in Canada (where most years, if not this one, we actually get winter), we see too many kids killed and injured from scarf strangulations. A safer alternative might be a neckwarmer or balaclava (hat/neckwarmer in one).

The US Product Safety Commission agrees - http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/5094.html - and Googling "child scarf strangle" turns up way too many cases.

For that matter, it's one of the reasons I favour short scarfs that can be tucked in - just ask Isadora Duncan. Undecided
