This thing has haunted me, and now I think it is finished.

I have an upcoming solo bellydance thing, and no fancy costume, and no money for a fancy costume...so I found all the info I could about covering my own bra and.. here we are. I made the bra top and the sash ( which is over a coin hip scarf because I couldn't face having to put coins on anything else for a little while and I have to dance Saturday night.

I am so happy and only ya'll really understand what kind of work this took.

That's really neat.  The fabric is great.

The fabric is some hand dyed silk brocade. I luckmed out when I figured out that I could scout around the used and new kimono shops for remenants. It was the end of a roll used to make obi ( sashes) so it wasn't very wide but it was enough for what I needed, about 8$ (1,000 yen)

I am a bit of a belly dancer myself.....just a wild gal with lots of enthusiasim but not so much technique.   If anyone is interested...ahem, Lost.....just pick up a video they are pretty helpful.  I have been using them while my instructor is taking a much needed break.

buggirl - congrats on the solo and the eye catching costume.

That is really beautiful.  You have to let us know how your solo goes (video please!  heh, j/k).

If you can get some of that nifty fabric really cheap (preferably cheaper than the $8 you paid for this project), you might consider trying to resell it online.  I would totally be trying to figure out how to make money if I ever found myself with access to cheap niftiness... And of course I am being selfish here because if you sold it online I might be able to get some nifty kimono fabric from you!

Again I just have to say, "Wow!"

You don't know HOW MUCH your costume made me smile! It's awesome! I have always told people I wanted to learn to belly dance, so this semester a friend sent me an "Art of Belly Dancing" kit in a care package -- it comes with a tiny booklet of instructions, and finger cymbals. I got so excited I made up my own costume (that was nowhere near as authentic or cool as yours) and danced around my apartment all night.

Here's a photo of my get-up... my roommate was cracking up and took pictures.  Grin My costume is not nearly as cool as yours, but I did make my skirt.

And your picture totally makes me smile. I'll be getting  zills (finger symbols) soon, which I'm sure my neighbors will love to death.

The event went really well, but sadly there are no videos. My own, modest, play-by-play can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/users/parasitegirl/37188.html

I have found a site for ordering bra and belt forms ( http://www.sugarpetals.com/ ) and will be ordering from them to cut down on my grunt work the next time I make a costume.

I'd think about selling funky kimono fabric on-line, but I do so hate navagating the Japanese post offices, it's gotten better, but it is still no fun.
