A friend of mine is looking for unusual cross stitch patterns that would appeal to "a couple who reads Poe and goes to see Tool and A Perfect Circle every time they come to the New England area." Do you know of sources for cross stitch patterns that aren't the usual cutesy-poo stuff?

I do know about Subversive Cross Stitch, but I think she is looking for a more complex pattern.

Maybe she could make her own? I'm pretty sure there is software out there that can do that.

I'm pretty sure I saw this website on another discussion here on Craftster.
It's a cool program that lets you upload a picture and then pixelates it for you- can be used for crossstitching too.
Good luck!

here's another free program that generates cross stitch charts from uploaded images:

i got the address from another craftster post but haven't tried it myself. it did get good feedback from the posters.

your friend could upload band logos or photos or banners or whatever she wanted.

in case she wanted something other than alt-rock images, though, there ARE cross-stitch charts for people whose tastes don't run to sunshine, flowers and uplifting mottoes. if she googled "historical samplers" or something similar, she'd probably find another type of chart.

There are some nice Celtic knot designs and design books out there I would think that would appeal to them.  I also have a book called "Elizabethan Crosstitch"  (I got it through a book club...) that has stuff in it that should be cool too.  Try a google or an Amazon search...
