How do you sew pieces together? The pattern said to slip stitch but I found the seam to be quite bulky. Are they any other ways?

Well, you can thread a needle with yarn and whipstitch it.  Personally, even though it can be bulky with a slip stitch, I like the "clean" look of the seam--I never can get my "sewn" seams to look very nice.  I did that on a pair of gloves and used a smaller hook to do it so that the seam was a bit less bukly.
