This is an excellent little book that I picked up in the US some time ago, I think it might have been shelved in the kids book section, and amazon reviews peg it as a kids craft book, but dont let that fool you, its excellent, and will save you lots of money!  its by Helen Roney Sattler and its a paperback, isbn 0-688-13199-9

it has recipes for everything from glues and pastes, modelling and casting compounds, paints and painting media, inks and printing stuff and even stuff to preserve flowers and newspaper cuttings,
