This is an amigurumi I made for a recent swap, based around the Discworld book 'The Hogfather' by Terry Pratchett. In it there is a small creature described as being vaguely elephant-like, which eats socks (thus explaining why you can never find a matching pair).

Here we have Claudius. He has been tamed and no longer eats socks. In fact, he is very useful as he now eats scraps of yarn, so he makes a great pet for the avid crocheter or knitter.

His snout is wide to allow him to suck up and eat socks, and his legs are naturally patterned that way to form camouflage amongst brightly coloured socks.

I grew very fond of him, and was quite sad to send him away on the swap. However, his new owner knits beautful socks, so he was very keen to live with her. Check out more photos of him on my Flickr page.

He is so adorable.  I just wanna squeeze him, except if I got close I might be putting my hosiery at risk.  Seriously, I love that you have crafted him eyelids.  It is a really special detail and gives him a lot of character

Thanks! In the book he's referred to as being quite sad/pathetic-looking, so I tried achieve that with the eyelids. Then, because he's tame and fiendly now, I gave him a little smile (never easy to do on something with a trunk/snout!)

Oh, he's great!  I love the different color legs and his trunk (which reminds me of a vacuum cleaner).

Glad I now know the 'real' place socks go - I remember reading an article years ago in a magazine called "The Sock Gobbler" and, in that story, missing socks were blamed on the dryer.

*Squee!* I love this. I just finished reading "Hogfather" yet again (I always end up reading it around this time of year), and this is just awesome.

the thought process behind this is really great and inspiring. I lvoe silly weird things like this. I love that his legs camouflage him against the socks he covets. He eats yarn now?! Isn't that a bit cannibalistic, considering he is made out of yarn? Well, he's the most adorable cannibal I have ever seen.
