I've seen a play mat made of fabric like this when I used to work at United Art & Education in Indiana (http://www.unitednow.com/home.asp) - you might be able to get ahold of their catalog and find it there.  I'm not sure - maybe even trying to call your local fabric stores and describing it.  There's gotta be some way to get ahold of it!  Maybe they have it on a large roll somewhere?  Good luck!

i bought some different road map fabrics at Hancock fabrics a few years ago, and have seen others.  They show up now and then.

a couple of years ago I made a simple, unbatted quilt for a road/town playmat for a nephew--different squares of greens, black between w/ embroidered road stripes, blue on the edge for boats & a brown dock, etc.  It was simple (especially since I didn't really have to quilt it), and pretty.
