Once upon a time, in the Kingdom of Mushrooms, lived a plumber named Mario, who was very devoted to the Purple Princess (Princess Peach was on vacation in Barbados with Luigi, apparently).

Mario, however, had a problem. His uniform was in tatters from all that crawling around in pipes and such, and he needed new overalls. So he called up the Royal Seamstress and requested new duds. "I need new overalls for the upcoming Halloween festivities, please," he told her. "I will be escorting the Purple Princess for trick-or-treating on the 31st of October."

"Will fleece be a good fabric?" the Royal Seamstress asked, thinking that fleece overalls would also work well as snowpants. "What color do you require?"

"I wear red overalls," replied the kindly plumber.

So the red fleece was purchased, and plans were underway to make the new overalls.  But the evil Bowser, wanting to ruin Mario's fun, caused a horrible freak snowstorm to fall upon the Mushroom Kingdom (which, for the purposes of our story, is in Western New York) and the kingdom was plagued with power outages and flooding. The Royal Seamstress was not daunted, because she already had the Red Fleece with which to make the new overalls (not to mention that she was too busy mucking the raw sewage out of the royal basement.  Tongue)

And so the time came when the overalls were to be made, so the Royal Seamstress asks Mario to bring her a picture of the overalls, so that she can copy them.  But when Mario brought the picture of the overalls, both he and the Royal Seamstress were totally aghast to realize....that his overalls are supposed to be BLUE.

"Don't cry, Mario," said the Royal Seamstress to the bereft Mario, who was sobbing loudly and really very upset. "For I am a crafty seamstress, and there just has to be some blue fabric in the 10,000 bins of fabric I've been hoarding since before you were born."

And lo, the blue fabric was found, and the cutting and sewing commenced.  And since time was short, there was much use of Spray Adhesive, fleece scraps, and magic marker, until Mario's new outfit was complete:

So Mario defeated Bowser, escorted the Purple Princess (who, luckily for the Royal Seamstress - who had glued her fingers together with the Spray Adhesive - was happy with a dress that was purchased off the rack at Joanns) in the annual trick-or-treating , and the day was saved!

(Until, of course, they ate too much candy and were too busy bouncing off the walls to go to bed..... Roll Eyes )

All Hail the Royal Seamstress, Savior of Overalls!! May your name be honored in the Hall of Records, throughout time (ie, the teen years, when they forget all about this, and want to know NOTHING about mom-made anything!!  Tongue ).

Thanks, everyone!

The Son wants me to point out that many portions of the story were true - he did tell me to make red overalls, and we didn't realize the error until about 9 pm the day before he needed the costume for a halloween party. And I would have realized it sooner, except we really did have a freak snowstorm that caused us to lose power and the basement flooded. (But it's really clean now!  Roll Eyes)

It was his idea to be Mario this year, and he's really thrilled reading all the responses. So, thanks from both of us!  Grin
