I'm having trouble getting gauge for a few things I'm TRYING to work on.

Firstly Fat Cat Pillow, I just can't get the gauge required

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4" in St st. I'm getting 24 sts to 4", and If I go up another size needle the fabric is going to be to open (holey). I've found I can get gauge if I use 2 strands of yarn but seeing as this is a chart pattern, I'm not sure if this is viable or will muck up the chart completley

Second is Whiteliesdesigns Shapely Tee, I've decided to substitute the yarn for Patons Zhivago, so soft and cuddly. Again the problem here is I can't get gauge, it's WAY to open, if I convert the pattern to fit a gauge I like, will I screw it up completley?

For the pillow, do you really even care about gauge?  It doesn't matter if the pillow is a bit smaller/larger than the gauge requires.  I doubt it would really mess up the chart--also I think if you want to double strand that shouldn't matter w/the chart.

For the top, I've converted patterns quite a bit and you can certainly make it work!
