I'm looking to get together a group of knitters (or other craftspeople), who like me, love making stuff but feel contrained by the fact that when you're done you have to DO something with what you've made, and well, one can only use so many hats and scarves.
And while the idea of selling goods for my own benefit doesn't move me much, I'd gladly sell goods to benefit some good cause. Ergo: Knitters for Choice. The premise is simple: create quality knitted items for sale at local craft fairs/ flea markets, you'll be reimbursed for your materials, and the profits will go to social causes. For now, the cause will be reproductive choice, and profits will go to NARAL PA for lobbying efforts so we can make sure that some pro-choice leaders get elected in November. After the election, when hopefully, the need for such funds will be slightly less pressing, we could possibly expand to other progressive causes.
Participants would be expected to drop off items for sale with suggested sale prices and care instructions (we'll make tags) and submit receipts (or something else indicating how much the item cost) for reimbursement. After each sale, knitters will be reimbursed for the cost of materials for each item that was sold, and can choose to either take unsold items or leave them in the pool for a later sale. We might also probably need people to help staff the sale tables, but all that can be figured out later.
For now, please let me know if you're interested by e-mailing: knittersforchoice@yahoo.com. The goal is to have a booth at Fairmount Flea Market on the first Saturday in October. If we have items sooner, we can do an earlier market, if not... you get the idea. If there's interest, we can all meet up to knit together at a coffee shop in center city as well.
