I've tried making these a bazillion times - and no matter how exact i follow the instructions they NEVER EVER work out. Whenver I get to the part where you pop it into shape it crumples or just doesnt work at all. I always end up getting frustrated ;( any tips?

Are you using paper made just for the stars?  I got mine from Morning Glory

http://www.mg-usa.com/item.asp?productId=1905

and it worked great.  Also, when it's time to "puff them out" be sure to use your fingernail and just indent the paper with a sort of crease.  As you move around the star it'll puff out.  And don't obsess about individual stars--when you string them up they look beautiful and perfect.
