my son loves collecting acorns- any ideas on how to perserve them?  we get them in a jar but then they get moldy...
i was thinking maybe dry them on a low heat  in the oven for an hour or two them shellac them with some mod podge and put them back in the mason jar and decorate . he also like pine cones. if you have ideas for those too that would be great!

If they dry on their own they're pretty much preserved, in my experience.  I tried drying a bunch of things in the oven and some of them collapsed, like the baking caused a too-rapid withdrawal of the moisture.  My best success has been to keep them in a paper bag and let them dry out on their own.  Maybe put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for overnight first to kill off any "hitchhikers"?
