I am completely lost!!! I have everything ready to start selling my handmade stuff online (polymer and resin  jewellery) but i am not quite sure of legal issues.Do i have to register for an ABN, tax??? what about centrelink and family tax benefit payments (as i have three children). On the department of fair trading site it states that a business dosent have to register its business name if it trades exclusively online.Yet every small business site says you do.Anyone own their own website selling their wares and wish to share some wisdom?.

there is a minimum you can earn and not have to register for BAS - i think the main ATO site has the most up to date info. However I think you have to have an ABN if you are running a business. Dept of Fair Trading is who you get the ABN from, so maybe give them a call and see what they say?
Oh and if you are looking for a good and cheap shopping cart, my site came from doodle cart. you can go with the basic templates or customise it as much as you want. makes the whole process so easy.

Sorry to be a tad off topic in regards to your question, but in addition to SixOneSix I run Attagirl Design which can create websites, logos, content, do photography, photo editing, website maintenence and more, all for indie and small businesses.
If you need to create your website (once you know about tax and bas etc) then PM me if you are interested.

Our website is http://www.attagirldesign.com (will be online asap! we're going through some renovation Smiley)
