Ok, well it's not 'finished' yet, The lining still has to go in. But I'm so damn proud I want to post pics anyway.

Craftster user AriadnesThread made a backpack from this fabric, and I loved it so much I asked her where she got it, and bought some myself.

Yes, the matching was a pain. But I'm anal retentive, and glutton for punishment to boot. It took a lot of measuring, but it's perfect all except for one spot...which my sewing buddy (Mom!) claims to not be able to see. But *I* know it's there.

The cording and (eventual) lining is cotton duck. It was a pain to sew through, but I couldn't find anything else that was the right shade of green. It's verrry sturdy, even without the lining. I cheaped out and used Peltex instead of Timtex. Hint: it's the same exact thing, only cheaper. The zipper is a 30" separating parka zipper that I 'modified' (read, 'almost killed my machine sewing over') to work. A.) I wanted big zipper teeth, and B) I wanted them to be plastic, not metal, and C) it was all JoAnn's had.  Wink

My fingers are a mess from pinning through so many layers of fabric and interfacing and cording and Peltex...but I am completely in love with the semi-finished product. I already have plans for a smaller bag, a makeup bag, and a shoe bag. A matched set, just in time for a beach trip! I LOVE this fabric!

Your bag is stunning!  I raced over to your etsy shop to see if you have similar items, but alas, you don't.  (Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?!)  Enjoy every minute with that bag.  You'll be traveling in style!

The fabric is from the 45" home decor section of JoAnn's.  Smiley

KCGal...you flatter me! I'm actually branching into some purses for my etsy store (soon-ish), and I hope the response is that positive!  Grin

ahhh--a girl after my own purse-making heart!!! The matching is wonderful and the piping is perfect--no wonkiness!!  You did a fabulous job -- be proud of your anal retentiveness, ha ha--the end results are, well, just gorgeous!!

I feel your pain about the limited supplies at Joann's...but you make do with what you have and you did great!!

Can't wait to see the other matching items!!  Don't forget a sunglass case!!! Cheesy

Great job! I'm still on the hunt for the right fabric for mine!

Question....how much extra did you buy for lining up the design?

I had two yards of the fabric, the pattern calls for 1 5/8 yds, I think. I have a good amount left over, but it's in pieces. I'd say buy two just to be safe. For a fabric with a smaller pattern, you could probably do with less than 2.

Wow!  I bought that pattern back in the spring, but haven't made it yet.  I think you've inspired me to make some counter space and get to work on it.  Those would make great presents (yes, I think about manufacturing x-mas presents this far ahead of time... hehe).

You did  a fantastic job!  I, too, am a sucker for lining up prints.  It makes me happy when they fit together.  I love that you also lined up the top flowers!  Great job!!!  I made this bag before and gave it away so I am starting my second because I loved it so much.  But I just started yesterday and already drew blood twice. Only with this bag has that happened...  But it's so great, I'll suck it up.

I love this bag so much!! I've been wanting to find a cute fabric weekender bag for awhile now (didn't even know that Amy Butler made a pattern for it). I might have to get this pattern and try it if I get up the guts (I'm a novice sewer and easily frustrated when things don't work out easily).

And I did the same thing, went right to your etsy shop to see if you sell anything of the like. :-)

Just Google 'Amy Butler Weekender Bag.' I got mine on Ebay, so you can look there, too.

Also, thank you very much to the people who have contacted me about commissioning a bag. I am VERY flattered! Unfortunately, however, because it is a commercial pattern, I am unable to make these to sell. But seriously, guys...you made my day!  Grin

This is crazy!!!  I didn't just make a backpack, you know.

I made this before I made the backpack, and only posted one.  I didn't use the pattern, I pirated the measurements off the envelope.

Your bag looks great.

I'm trying to decide if I should try to take this on or not. Would you mind saying aprox. $ the project ended up taking after you bought all the supplies? Thanks!

Offhand? Too much. I am a serious El Cheapo Crafter. I'd say about $40, and that's with a few of the components on sale and a 40% off coupon for the expensive interfacing. But it really was worth it in the end. The finished product is sturdy and very useable. I'd say go for it, definitely.

You did a beautiful job!!!!!!
Here's a hint:  Use needle nose pliers to get a needle through difficult fabric without hurting your fingers.  I use mine all the time and no more sore bloody finger tips.
