The stitching one of my husband's leather sandals came out, and I remembered I had this nifty tool I bought several years ago. It's called The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl.
You can view it here:
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C118&id=75944
It comes with heavy-duty waxed tread, and 2 heavy needles, 1 straight, and one w/ a curved end. According to the leaflet inside the box, you can order a finer needle and thread from the manufacturer for finer sewing projects.
According to the box, it can be used to repair or sew awnings, tents, sails, handbags, upholstery, auto tops, shoes, saddles, sporting equipment.
I actually could have used the supplies for finer sewing, but the thick needle and thread worked out fine, the tools was very easy to use, and now my husband can wear his sandals again!
Yay!!
