All I did was knit a small toque shape (any baby pattern would do), and instead of finishing the decreases, I joined the grey yarn and knit a tube for about 5 inches, then closed it off.  Inside the hook part there is a piece of thick wire, with the ends curled up, sewed inside a piece of felt and stitched in place. It's pretty awesome!
