I gave a friend of mine a link to some sewn armwarmers I just finished, and he says...

idream4u****: oh cool, you knit it?
Almost a Scone: Sewn.
Almost a Scone: I don't knit.
Almost a Scone: I wish I could...
idream4u****: isn't that the same thing?
Almost a Scone: ...

He gives me a very basic, completely and utterly dumbed down definition of sewing, and I told him to google knitting to see the difference.

idream4u****: u still take that thick thing and move it up & down with a stick

*sigh* Do you guys have this problem? How do you deal with explaining to the less crafty people what it is you do in your free time?

Oh wow. That's just ridiculous. My boyfriend of 4 years STILL doesn't understand that I CROCHET and I do not, in fact, know how to knit. I mean, we live together! he should get it by now! But he at least knows the difference between sewing and knitting (I should HOPE so considering his mother has been a seamstress for almost her entire life)

Wow... that's really thick. Nope, noone's ever done anything like that, although I've had hubby ask me what I'm knitting when I'm crocheting... it was funny... his dad (who is this big hunter manly man) informed him that I was crocheting, and explained that crochet is done with one hook, and knitting... two needles.Cheesy:D

I had an awesomely proud moment the other day..my boyfriend picked up an old Sly and the Family Stone record at the thrift store and said, "Look, he's wearing a cool crocheted hat!" and I thought, "If he is actually right and it's not knitted I will faint." And it WAS crocheted! Ha ha! I am so proud. Really cool hat, too...big red thing.

Her dirty paws and furry coat,
She ran down the forest slope.
The forest of talking trees,
They used to sing about the birds and the bees.
The bees had declared a war,
The sky wasn't big enough for them all.

Conversation at work a few days ago...

Him: C'mere, you're crafty, you should know what this is. *picking up an implement of unknown provenance that has nothing to do with what we do.*
Me: Ummm...
Him: I can't believe you don't know what this!
Me: All right, what is it?
Him: It's a crochet hook!
Me: No, it's not.
Him: Yeah it is!
Me: No. Not a crochet hook.
Him: It so is! Fine, tell me why you think it isn't.
Me: First of all, the end on a crochet hook is kind of pointed so you can poke it through the loops more easily, while that has a rounded end. Second of all, the wire is too thin, crochet hooks are much thicker. And I don't even know what's going on with the other end of that thing,
Him: ...It might've been a crochet hook.
Me: It's not a crochet hook.
