I found the pictures I took of some bakes a friend and I did after she bought one of the official GBBO cook books!

Our first adventure was a lemon swiss roll - rolling that baby was scary!! But we didn't get as much cracking as feared...also the layered slices of lemon on top were my attempt at a fancy garnish. Needs some work haha.

And then later we did two loaves, a plaited saffron and a cheesy something something (insert I can't remember exactly what it was) loaf. The proving time was serious - I see why they have cups of tea at the ready for all the slow bits in between.

Anyone else have a fancy (or not fancy) bake they want to share?  Cheesy

How is everyone doing? Just a reminder, we have just about 2 weeks left until send outs  Wink

Who is your spirit Baker?

I think Sandy (UK Series 6) is mine - she enjoys herself without getting too stressed when things don't go as planned  Cheesy

Anyone else obsessed with The Great British Bake Off? I could listen to the soothing tones of Mary Berry praising a bake all day. We'll be making a medium and a small for our partner, and any extras will need to be discussed before sending (these are not required)! Let's share our disgust of soggy bottoms, our delight at who gets named star baker, and have fun crafting for this amazing show.

*PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to send a perishable item for your medium or your small (please check with your partner to make sure they'd appreciate this), your other item MUST be non-perishable; we want a keepsake from this swap that doesn't get eaten!  Cheesy

Some ideas to craft:

Love the graphic!!

I stumbled on this one the other day while pinning for this swap:

I feel like I'm doing the equivalent of staring at my oven waiting for partners...

Also damn this is a pretty cake tin. Have to imagine getting a perfect impression like that requires a precisely proved dough though!  Wink

Ooh, I forgot you did that fluffypants! What was the whole process like (if you have time and want to share  Wink)? I tried to look up the application form for GBBO to share it here for amusement but I guess they have it on lock-down when they're not accepting new apps.

I love to share! Grin It was such a neat experience. And I have trouble ever telling a "short version", haha.

First up was the online application. Lots of questions about what you like to bake, why you like to bake, who you bake for, why you need to be on the show, and a bunch of legalese. There was a spot to upload a video if you so desired, and I figured  what better way to introduce myself? I assumed my odds were better if I went to the effort. I spent days trying to shoot the perfect video, and an evening editing it together. I was really happy with it when it was done, so I got it all uploaded and sent 'er in.

A couple of days later, I got a call for a phone interview. They asked me a lot of questions about specific things and whether I'd done them  lots of more "complex" things, but the only ones I remember specifically were tempering chocolate and making Swiss meringue buttercream. It lasted maybe 20 minutes and I'm sure my heart was pounding the entire time as I racked my brain to remember everything I'd baked in the past year.

Well, a few days after that, I got an invitation to audition in Toronto! I live in a small town about a 2 hour flight from Toronto, so I quickly booked a ticket and went down for  get this  April Fool's Day weekend. I began to wonder whether the whole thing may be an elaborate joke. Cheesy I stayed with my cousin and his partner and their apartment was BOILING HOT. I assembled a sloppier-than-I-would-have-liked cake the evening before the auditions (melting ganache, last minute late night trips to the store, oh my!) and slept on the floor.

The auditions took place at a cooking school, where we brought our bakes, had headshots taken, and baked for the audition judges while they walked around doing interviews. Before beginning, they had a pep talk and then told us to grab the supplies we needed. All of the baking utensils, bowls, etc. were spread out on a table. I recall grabbing what I thought was a set of measuring spoons, only to find out when I got back to my station that they were set out in piles by size, not in sets, and I had grabbed ALL of the tablespoons, hahaha. Oops. (Sabotage!)

We all received a basic scone recipe and had access to a table full of different mix-ins to make our own flavours. When I had been deciding what to bring for my "signature" bake, I was down to either my peanut butter chocolate cake (which won out) or a Finnish coffee bread I learned from my Mummo. So, I decided to take the flavours of the coffee bread and put them into a scone I used cardamom and raisins, and mashed up some blueberries in the glaze, as blueberries always remind me of Finland. They turned out delicious! I have been hooked on scones ever since.

I made friends with a few people at the audition and we made a point to keep in touch on Facebook. One of them even made it on the first season of the show! It was very cool to live vicariously through him. I've applied both years since then, but have yet to make it back to an audition. Hopefully one of these years will be my lucky year. Smiley Even just the audition experience was so fun! I'd love to do it again.
