Okay, I made this waaaay harder than I needed to. I will re-read the article in CPS.

For some reason, I decided to add backing so I ended up turning it, like a pillow cover. I added the hangers.
This is the same design I used in my first 4 x 6 art piece - for ArtHouseCoop and Craftster.

This is my second try. It is huge - more like a banner. But I wanted to try out my new alphabet stamps, as I said last night. It is unfinished. I want to add birds and now rethinking the finishing.

I think it's about 8 x 12 but will be smaller if I trim it.

Future partners - don't fret. I'll figure it out in time for the swap. I often have to go large so I can practice ins and outs of projects!

The concept is simple: decorate a rectangle of fabric with words and/or images that convey a personal prayer. It can be all fabric, or a mixed-media piece, it's up to you.

The prayer flag will be a finished size of 5" x 8", so it will be small and easy to mail in an envelope. This will be a NO EXTRAS swap (a first for me and Susan!!) so it will be doable for anyone with even a little spare time.  You may choose to have one or two partners.

There is a cool blog called The Prayer Flag Project that is dedicated to these flags if you want to read more on the topic. The original idea is that the prayer flag is hung outdoors to slowly deteriorate and release your prayer into the world.  With that in mind, you can see that it is not expected to be a masterpiece of perfect stitching.  Rather, it is an art piece that is thoughtfully and prayerfully made.

We will use the recent article about them in Cloth Paper Scissors as our guide; the instructions below are taken from that link:

How to Make Prayer Flags

1. Cut pieces of fabric to 5" x 11". Use materials you already have on hand.
2. Fold the top down on each piece of fabric and stitch in place to create a 3" sleeve, making the flag surface 5" x 8".
3. Paint, stitch, embroider, appliqu, or collage the flags.
4. Add words, journaling, or symbols as desired. You can appliqu letters, add hand stitching, stencil with textile paint, or just write with a permanent marker.
5. Thread the flags onto a string or cord and hang them outdoors so the breeze will catch them and spread your intentions.

Details of swap:
--You will craft one prayer flag for each partner, keeping your partners preferences in mind.  Extras are NOT allowed.  If you and your partner want to send anything other than the prayer flag, please do not post pictures of those items in the swap thread (but you may post pictures in the personal swap gallery, if you like.)
--You will have three full weeks to craft and send, from July 12th to August 3rd.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending elsewhere.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.
- Good communication is very important. Please stay in touch by posting weekly in the swap thread.
- PM both organizers and your partner when you send and when you receive.
- Please post photos of the package you receive in the gallery, and take pictures of what you make before you send it.

I have a question from the instructions.  It says to make a 3 inch sleeve leaving a 5 x 8 inch surface for the actual flag.  If I fold down 3 inches, I only have a 5 x 5 inch surface.  On the other hand, if I fold down 1.5 inches I have a 1.5 inch sleeve and still have a full 5 x 8 inch surface to embellish.

Without a visual can't tell how you're doing it, waggons, but measuring down three inches on the 11 inch side and folding there, you should be left with 8 inches [11 - 3 = 8]:

The shaded pocket area in the second image shows 3 inches; this will be narrower if you hem the folded over end, but the 8 inch length will remain the same.

And typing this reminds me that if you're going to hem the raw sides and want to have a 5 x 8 finished flag, you'll need to start with a piece of fabric larger than 5 x 11, adding your hem depth on all sides.
