if i simply do a pick up style skirt for the bottom part, will it still look good? i have no idea how to make the skirt spiral down like that...

hey, well i haven't actually draped anything really, but here is something i found that could be useful to you...
this person has 3 fashion draping videos...hope that can help some.

I think you could probably get away with doing the whatthecraft thing, they do make stretch satin, so that might be easiest to use, its just kinda spendy. I would do a mock up of it first with some crappy fabric to make sure it would work first, if you are busty, it may not work so well.

well i guess i can thank God for my small bust then Smiley

oh and another thought...would it be better if i did the sunglass type thing from whatthecraft or should i make something with princess seams and cut that into a sweetheart shape to go underneath the pleated bit?

thanks, i'll look into those Smiley
16  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Hello! and Shorts Pattern/Tutorial? on: January 18, 2010 03:27:31 PM
hey there! well, i've made 2 pairs of shorts before, one was pj shorts with elastic and the other were out of corduroy and i did a zipper fly on them...it seems intimidating at first, but actually the zipper fly was not too hard. i used a tutorial around here for the zipper fly: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=225672.0
the shorts i made are right here and if you want to make those i could send you the pattern (but i only have a size small for it...perhaps you could adjust it if that is not your size?): https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=237771.0
mine weren't very high waisted but that is only because i cut off most of the top from the pattern which was pretty high waisted and may be what you are looking for?
also here are some sailor shorts that someone made on here that look great: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=131147.10 and maybe you could figure out how to make them from here.
Burdastyle also has a free pattern for sailor shorts that you might want to check out: http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/sailor-in-burmuda
hope that helped  Grin

i think i get what you're saying.
do you think that would work if i made the sweetheart bust first and then put the large piece of pleated fabric over it and sewed it like in the ruffled variation of the contour bust top here: http://whatthecraft.com/tuts/cbust.htm (pleating it instead of ruffling it)? or would i have to use stretchy fabric for the whatthecraft.com tutorial?
18  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Help Please? I'm going to try to sew my prom dress... on: January 17, 2010 10:56:26 AM
Okay, so i'm feeling ambitious. i've sewn for quite a while, but i've never sewn a dress before. So i found a picture of what i think is the PERFECT prom dress, but its $358 and i dont have that kind of money to spend on it.  I'd also like to make it a royal blue color instead of red.
so here's what the dress looks like:

i know i probably wont be able to make a dress exactly like it, but i really like the top part so much.  i want to start early so i have plenty of time to make it perfect. so do you guys have any ideas how to go about it or any patterns i could use or alter a bit to make something like this dress?
