11  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions / help me personify this word please! on: April 26, 2011 07:15:33 AM
basically its a friends birthday in a few weeks and when messing about a while back we changed the words to a song, and now i have decided i need to make an 'insidious squidious' aka insidious looking squid plush toy for her birthday LOL

I need some help thinking of some ideas, I need characteristics of someone or something that would be described as 'insidious'

insidious [in-sid-ee-uhs]
intended to entrap or beguile: an insidious plan.
stealthily treacherous or deceitful: an insidious enemy.
operating or proceeding in an inconspicuous or seemingly harmless way but actually with grave effect: an insidious disease.

Im thinking to personify that word would make the subject kind of shifty looking, a bit sneaky, but other than that im idealess

12  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Framed hammock for rats (with tutorial) on: March 05, 2011 04:57:17 AM
I have seen these about and fancied having a go at making one, just made one this morning and they are very simple! So here is the finished item, as modelled by currently unnamed rat who has joined my coven today.

Start with the frame, I used 2mm galvanised wire, galvanised means it wont go rusty when your rats marinade their hammock..  Lips sealed Use wire cutters to cut and pliers to shape. I couldnt find the wire cutters so used old dog clippers in my usual bodge it style!

Measure your frame and make your pattern for the material. I used one piece of cotton and one piece of fleece, dont forget to leave your prefered seam allowance. Fold over and sew one of the long sides of each rectangle of fabric.

Now put right sides together and sew round the other three sides, leaving your desired seam allowance. Turn back the right way and check it fits the frame!

Now sew the inside U shape, remember the wire has to go on the inside so leave about a cm maybe more to get the wire in, the material needs to be removable for washing. Then sew accross the top of the U.

My boys are chewers so i have to kind of 'quilt' ever hammock i mkae as it slows down the destruction slightly, if yours are magic rats that dont chew then you dont need to do that bit!

slide onto the wire and you are done!

Modifications you can make....

*a wider hammock would need an eyelet adding so you can cable tie the fabric to the cage bars to keep it sturdy
* add a pouch
* add a second layer so its like a double decker framed hammock!

More photos to follow!

15  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Zero from nightmare before xmas child costume help please! on: October 13, 2009 03:07:30 AM
click this link if you need a reminder what he looks like!

my 5yr old is jack skellington for his party this coming sunday and his siter, 3, wants to be zero. she will need her arms free though as she is a very active child and i dont want to have to get her changed to eat her lunch etc. so a sheet over the head with a red nose weont work!

so the ideas ive had either

a) use a sheet covering all over her except her head and have arm holes, she would need a white long sleeved top underneath

b) smae as above but instead of arm holes, cut from the bottom up at the front so there are like panels of material and have her wear all black underneath (its a disco so should be fairly dark) then hopefully it will look like the sheet bit is floating....

before i start can anyone advise which method would be best? and im sorry im not great at explaining things in a way which they make sense lol
