2  Fake Shashi. Cass-shi bracelet. Linen + Metal bead bracelet, boho/Indian. in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by cassiecate57 on: April 04, 2011 10:44:08 AM
I got inspired by looking at these types of bracelets. I stared at it for awhile trying to decide where to start with the project. Do you start at the square knots with the beads? Do you start at the left or right end with the final/starting knot? How do you do that slider thingy?

I made my own bracelet using linen and square metal beads from JoAnn for $4 supplies (I have enough linen for infinity bracelets and enough beads for 2).

I used a few videos on YouTube to refresh on my ole' square knot (for hemp bracelets). The realization for me came when I realized that knot for the slider is a SEPARATE piece of the bracelet (the tutorial I looked at had two separate colors to emphasize this).

It's not *perfect* but for about a dollar in materials, I'm happy with it. It's also supposed to be simple and kind of messy. A little carefree, boho-ish.

Waxed Linen: $2 for a huge spool (used about ~14 feet?), thinner is better. you can experiment with other string options. I Looked for Nymo but didn't find it. I also didn't look that hard.
Silver square beads: $2 (22 pc, used 12 here), bigger holes are better. The bead will need to go through two carrier strings of whatever type of string you decide on...
I would also suggest a clipboard/board+nail for the project. It's hard to keep the knots stable.

1. Make a small (1/2" or less) loop by tying a knot in two equal length pieces of waxed linen, about 3-4' each, halved to 18"-2'. Do a square knot to start the bracelet.
2. Then place your first bead on the carrier strings. square knot it to secure it.
3. Leave about 3" empty space (no knots) then make a regular OH knot. This is where your 10 beads will start.
4. Square knot, bead, square knot, bead til you get your 10 beads threaded. Finish the 10 beads with a square knot.
5. Leave another 3" with no knots to match the beginning of the bracelet. This is the end of the bracelet and the beginning of your slider closure.
6. After the 3" blank area, leave another 2-3". This is where your adjustable area will be (it needs to be bigger than your wrist in order to get the bracelet on/off).
7. Thread your final bead into your last square knot, make another small (1/2" or less) loop to match the other end. Trim excess.
To make the slider closure, view the Slider Knot closure tutorial. You can use a contrasting color or stick with the same color. Either way! I left the ends a little straggly on the slider closure.

I'm NOT a master jeweler. I'm totally a novice. I'm sure anything you made would look more cleaned up, professional and cute but I wanted to share the skeleton of this project to anyone who doesn't want to spend $18+ on a friggin' linen bracelet.

Next round, I'm going to try pink embroidery floss and metal beads. I want a whole stack of 'em.

3  Method of Payment: Square, coolest thing ever! in Crafty Business Discussion by cassiecate57 on: February 12, 2011 09:35:21 AM
I'm considering starting a small freelance business as a makeup artist and learned about Square and thought I should share. If you are a person who can't afford a card reader but does have a smart phone (Android or iPhone/iPad), you can accept credit cards via Square. Download the app (Square) and visit squareup.com to get a free card reader (a "square"). There are fees, like everything on earth, but they're not too bad. $0.15 + 2.75% on anything you swipe through your square, somewhere under 4% for keyed-in card numbers. As a makeup artist, if I charge $50 for a makeup application, I can run the client's card right there, in front of them and pay only $1.50. That's small potatoes. So if you're a person who does a lot of craft fairs or sells a lot in-person, you should think about getting Square for your smartphone. I have no affiliation with them, I just think it's neat and mega useful.

mta: apparently, square pays for advertising on craftster (or Google is way too smart), because i just checked the thread and at the bottom i see this:

4  Re: One Tiny Book Swap - GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by cassiecate57 on: September 22, 2010 05:33:56 PM
I received a cute book from Kelli/rainbowendings Smiley

I am not exactly sure if there is a format of how I am supposed to read it or not. But I just flipped through, then flipped it over and did the same thing! It is cute and funny. My favorite part is the bit about the evil giraffe(from Eddie Izzard Smiley).

I think we need a bigger boat.

Is a hippopotamus a hippapotatmus? Or is it a hip-apotamus?

Narwhals narwhals swimming in the ocean, causing a commotion, cuz they are so awesome!!

Chess is ruthless. You have to be prepared to kill people.

So, the Labyrinth is a piece of cake, is it? Well let's see how you deal with this little slice.

We're all a little mad here.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat moreleaves from this tree then perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

I LOVE IT, KELLI. I can't stop flipping through it. You did a great job. Guess I better put mine together, huh? I'm being such a procrastinator. Smiley

Thank you!!

Updated my unofficial post

Here's what else I've been hoarding over the last few days while I furiously scan PMs, spreadsheets and threads to see who has received from whom. Smiley

A lovely package from kittenmittens. I really like the idea of this little metal clip. I'm interested to see how it holds up. I wouldn't dream of using it on my pristine books. But the bulk of my books are from the library so ... ::raspberry:: Cheesy

Because of her shipping nightmare, she enclosed a few little extras for us lucky F-sters. I got some pretty marbled paper (E! Gads! It's a bookmark!) and some soap. I'm anxious to try the soap. I never use bar soap but I will now! What scent is the soap? It smells somewhat familiar.

(placed for aesthetic value in Only Revolutions)

I've gone and mixed everything up into my bookmark collection so I'm not positive but I'm pretty darn sure these marks came from Crystal/crystallized_art. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking at envelopes and trying to remember what came in each envelope. They're all the same!! They are both from my burlesque theme, both showcasing lovely corsets. One is a corner marker (in another "so you think you wanna be a lawyer"-type book) and the other is a decorated ribbon. It reminds me of a garter, I like that. Smiley Craftsters, you never cease to amaze me at being able to nail someone's taste, dead-on. On another note, I got a compliment on my little corner corset marker today from a complete stranger. I was like, "Oh, well you should know it's handmade! From Craftster.org, allow me to explain to you!" I am a total missionary for Craftster in my spare time Smiley And you do B-e-a-utiful work, Crystal! A total stranger loved it Smiley

I received this AWESOME cupcake zombie from Rainbowsaurus. I love it. It's residing in "How to Succeed In Law School" (I'm considering going back to school.)

Thank you, Lindsay!

I received from gossamer_gull and darthsqurl yesterday Smiley

It was a good day for the mail!

From darthsqurl: pretty blue+buttons and a thong, very nice!

and from gossamer_gull, I got a boatload!
One is one of my favorite words (timshel) from my favorite book (East of Eden), I even have it tattooed on my body. One is lovely lavender and one is a neat mardi gras-type mask. I love them all.

She also enclosed a funny comic, if anyone has ever read House of Leaves.

I have a whole bucket o' markers on my nightstand now. I have NO EXCUSE for ever using a receipt again!

(this is my unofficial post)

I'm sure it was lovely, Andrea.

I received today from Andrea (pollyprissypants) and I love it.

The quote says, "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. -Groucho Marx"

And here's my action shot Smiley

(I'm reading The Heart is a Lonely Hunter)

And here's a pic of my mark from PureOath (it looks lovely and is magnetic).

I received from HippieKender and it's friggin' awesome. It's the Portland city skyline (I haven't lived here long enough to pick anything out...maybe next year Wink ) with a nice little silver beaded dangle. It's in copy of e.e. cummings' complete works.

I received a few days ago from squire_inaria. It's a lovely geisha with one of my favorite quotes on it. "Be patient and tough, someday this pain will be useful to you."

(It's in Only Revolutions, I am so excited to start it!) Thank you, Sara. I love it. It's sturdy and simple. Just my taste Smiley

Oooh I just received from Tero (and yours finally(!) went out today in the mail). It's a kawaii fawn with a purple tassle. I am choosing to tell myself it's a My Little Pony and I wrap it's luscious mane around the fawn. Obviously, I love all of it. You are awesome, Tero.

Received from habitat-lady. She drew me some dynamic waffles. It's awesome! I just started a list of "facts" about Freemasons so it's guarding those facts. The pictures are kind of crappy but the waffles are laminated with a gold tassel. They are very cool!

9  Bookmark Swap Round 3 (Signups 07/15-08/04, Send-outs 'extended' 09/07) in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by cassiecate57 on: July 15, 2010 04:41:21 PM
We're DONE! 10/17/10
If you've sent all your marks and they've all been received, I will give you feedback and your name will appear in purple. If I've missed you, let me know!

If your partner doesn't receive a bookmark (since the packages are probably too light for DC#), you need to be willing to resend! This is worst-case-scenario.
Delivery Confirmation Specifications
(As far as I know, parcel means like, more than 3/4" thick or after a certain weight so I don't think you can buy DC. You can do Certified Mail for like $1.35 or $2 (domestic) on an envelope but I don't think you can buy DC on a small mail item.)

You have the option, as a swapper, to either:
--be in a group of 5 (where you craft 4 bookmarks for the other people in your group)
--be matched up with a partner (where you craft only one bookmark).

I received from the lovely ktlady.

She crafted me a wonderful, beautiful package.

I got:
-3 bold-colored tea towels. I love them. They're so adorable...squee!
-a checkbook cover. I love checkbook covers and think they're a lost art form.
-cupcake appliques (I can cupcakify anything I want!)
-a key fob (I use keys at one of my jobs so it's nice to have them on hand) ...not pictured because it immediately went to my keys!
-a...coaster? Is that right? It's a quilted square. Inform me if I'm wrong, Katie!

Everything is so well put together and I hit the partner lotto with ktlady. Thank you for such a great package. And thank you edenkitty for organizing Smiley
