11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / my very first purse... on: February 09, 2010 12:38:30 PM
Ever since I got my mac, and realized what it was like to be able to carry around a laptop that didnt weigh as much as a brick, Ive had this problem I dont know what to carry it in. The purse that I always use is way too small, and (call me picky) but I didnt just want to walk around with a canvas bag. On top of it, Im going to England in three weeks and I needed a big carry-on bag that could hold everything.

WELL, me being me, I decided that I was going to make my OWN bag that was big enough to hold my laptop and other things, along with looking pretty. So I looked at some photos of purses I liked, made a pattern and got to work. I didnt spend a penny on this bag I have a massive stash of fabric held in multiple Rubbermaid containers all over my apartment, so I just pulled from there and this is what happened! It helped that I had a spare ugly purse lying around (about to go to the thrift shop) so I took the straps and random tan accessories from it and put them on my bag. It was a complete experiment, but I am soooo happy with how it turned out!

VOILA! Pretty good for a first try, eh?
12  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / dolphins... in SPACE? on: August 11, 2009 02:43:15 PM
so I haven't posted in forever because I've been passing my summer at a summer camp in upstate New York. Ironically, I'm the photography teacher, but we'll just go with it... anyways, I got bored (hah) a couple of weeks ago at camp I was missing sewing so I decided to make a dress for one of my campers. Shes hysterical and always up for a good laugh, so I knew shed appreciate a dress made with dolphins in space fabric (the most hideous fabric that we have). A few weeks later we did a photo shoot down on counselors rock. Its a pretty simple dress, but it was super fun to make and even more fun to have her wearing such a spectacularly ridiculous dress.

13  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / I make hats that GLOW. on: June 09, 2009 03:55:50 PM
So I'm doing this thing with stuff in a foreign country....
How vague is that? I'm not going to be any more specific because I'm supposed to keep this top-secret, but I'm so excited that I have to post!!! I made three hats for some outfits and they GLOW. You know the tap-lights that can turn on and off when you tap the top of them? Well I put mini ones in these hats so they glow. There's a reason for them glowing, but I'm not really at liberty to divulge such information (I sound so legit and cryptic...)
Anyways, I have to mail them off tomorrow and I needed good pictures of them before I sent them off. Luckily my best friend came over and we did an impromptu photo shoot. Thank god I have beautiful friends!
Here they are:

Hilariously enough, there was an audience during the shoot who were also taking pictures. I love the mayhem that's going on behind the lens that the audience never sees. Well, I'm here to give you a peek!

me fixing her hair before a shoot:

her boyfriend looking on and taking pictures (while my mom takes a picture of all of us)"

and me shooting:

How very different reality is from the finished product!  Cheesy
14  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / my first fantabulous, polka dotted wedding dress! [epic pictures] on: June 08, 2009 11:47:20 AM
HALLOOOO. So I've been insanely busy doing tons of things, one of which is making this wedding dress. The bride is a friend of a friend who contacted me because she knew that I made clothes and she liked my style. And boy, was she right. She's really fun and funky and was super easy to work with. She either liked something or she didn't, and she wasn't afraid to tell me, which was perfect. We started in November and I made three versions of the dress in sheets to make sure it fit perfectly before I put it into real fabric. and WOAH was it hard to find that polka dot sheer fabric. Thank god for upholstery stores and curtain sections.
Then we did an amazing photoshoot, even though it was unbelievably hot hot hot and humid (thanks Virginia summers). Anyways, ENJOY!!!

(she was very daring with that dress...)
15  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / the most epic dragon dress known to man on: April 30, 2009 03:07:14 PM
EDIT hey guys! Sorry, but I had to take down the pictures.... I just found out that I could be disqualified for posting images before the show. so... sorry! If you haven't seen it, use your imagination!

so..... here's a very long story cut very short: my best friend and I do wearable art together. If you've seen any of my other things, you know what she looks like because she's always the one who models my stuff. anyways, we decided that we were going to apply for a grant to go to New Zealand and be in World of Wearable Art (google that stuff.) well, we actually GOT the grant, which made us scream and bounce alot. but then we had to make something. oh snap.
well, what a better thing to make than a giant dragon perched on a pagoda type thing? yeah. so that's what's consumed my life for months. the hat and head are made out of paper mache, the body of the dragon and the dress and made of fabric and the skirt is made of wood.
16  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / sheer polka dot fabric, ANYONE? on: April 27, 2009 10:06:52 AM
Hayyy guys!

So I'm making this wedding dress for my friend, and she wants the dress to have a sheer shell of fabric over the dress. Which she wants to be white polka dots. Relatively large ones, not tiny ones.
And I can't find that sort of fabric ANYWHERE. I found some marvelous fabric similar to it in Mood over the summer, but that was yellow dots. and it was Marc Jacobs fabric so it was $50 a yard. ugh.

Anyways, if you have ANY ideas of where I could find fabric like that, it would be great. Even curtains. Anything. Let me know!!! PLEASE. <3
17  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Mother's Little Helper on: February 23, 2009 11:34:27 AM
so.... this is an incredibly old project of mine (think early 2007) that I JUST photographed. So here it is. The assignment was to create a "Survival Kit" for an environment of your choosing.
I decided to make a survival kit for being the "ideal" 1950's housewife. The apron unzips to reveal hidden pockets full of everything a housewife could need, including cooking utensils, instant cake mix, and frozen dinners. In the left pocket are beauty supplies, makeup, pearls, etc. for looking the part. In the right pocket are more devious things like cigarettes, fake nails, yellow rubber gloves, panty hose, and pill bottles.
Inspiration was taken from the Rolling Stone's song "Mother's Little Helper."

Mother's Little Helper lyrics:

What a drag it is getting old.
"Kids are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day.

"Things are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day.

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

"Men just aren't the same today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy. You can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimise your plight.

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

"Life's just much too hard today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running to the shelter of a mother's little helper
They just helped you on your way through your busy dying day
18  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / this is almost too normal for me... on: February 16, 2009 10:56:11 AM
so I made this jacket for my sister for Christmas... and didn't end up sending it till Valentines. Whatever, it was worth the wait. It's just made from this AWESOME upholstery fabric that I got at Wal-Mart (my tiny-town Wal-Mart is still carrying fabric, HOLLA) and I sewed this up right quick.

yeah. there's not much more to say. sorry, it doesn't miraculously transform into an umbrella like other sillyness I make. wow... that's actually a good idea  Cheesy

yeah.... thanks for looking!
19  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Fits Like a Glove! Dress Made from Yellow Dish Gloves on: February 03, 2009 08:58:13 AM
so... I basically directly "borrowed" this idea from someone on this board. I tried, but for the life of me I can't find them to give them credit. So pat yourself on the back, whoever you are. Mimicking is the most sincerest form of flattery!

Basically I thought that using yellow dish gloves was a perfectly brilliant material use. So I drafted a pattern, cut it out of muslin and then sewed millions of pieces of yellow dish gloves to each piece. I used about 52 pairs of gloves, and at least forty hours of sewing. It's stupid how long this thing took.

and then my bff and I did a shoot in my tub. It was way much fun.
anyways, enjoy!

20  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Thank You, Have A Nice Day! on: January 09, 2009 11:10:26 AM
Halloooo! *waves*
So, I'm a loooong time craftster, first time poster over here in purses. I usually keep up habitation over in the clothing section.

I don't really make bags but I couldn't help myself with this one. I happened to see someone making replicas of plastic bags in this forum and thought it was a brilliant idea. Well, one afternoon when I was staring off into space I happened to see one of those infamous "Thank You, Have A Nice Day" plastic bags sitting on my floor and I thought to myself "gee... that would make a super-rad bag" So. I sat down and cut out a pattern, traced the script from the original bag onto the fabric, spent five hours embroidering, sewed up some seams, did some french seaming and some ironing and... VOLIA! The raddest "plastic" bag ever.  Cheesy
