I am also stationed at NAS Sigonella!  I have been here about 2 years and absolutely love it.  I am a knitter and have a small group that mostly meets in Catania.  You didn't say what sort of crafts you were looking for but we can at least get you to the right part of the market and to the yarn/sewing shops around here.

Our group's blog is www.shriekofnature.com/knit
We try to meet once or twice a month.

I don't have an iPod but I love this idea - I am going to felt one for my palm.  (hi btw, I happened upon your board and love it!)

About the button hole and felting.  I just felted a wallet that has a button hole made prior to felting.  When I got to the area where I wanted my buttonhole, I bound off approximately the number of stitches that matched the size of the button.  I knew it was probably not going to shrink that much side to side but would probably close on itself due to the top to bottom shrinking.  On the very next round (or row), I cast on that number of stitches when I got to the bound off stitches.  On the following row, when I got to the buttonhole section, I decreased two stitches at the center of the  buttonhole.  This slightly rounded and opened the buttonhole.  Once felted, the result was absolutely perfect.  I would post a picture but I am at work (shhhhh, don't tell).
