1  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Random string doll on: December 16, 2007 07:25:20 PM
I head over to a girlfriend's house of mine for Craft night ever week, but she has kids so personal crafts don't always get started right away. We have to have some 'kid craft' time first. So this usually consists of my making some random doo-dads out of her stash of kid friendly items. One night, I made this string doll out of yarn! (Don't ask me which kind, I have no idea, it was just there, so I used it.) I plan on making more out of different kinds of yarn. He kind of ended up looking like a voodoo doll, but I still love it. (The fact that he looks like a voodoo doll might make me love him even more)

The head is made completely out of string, no base, but I cheated for the body and made a little pipecleaner body as a base for the string to wrap around.

This one will help you see what size it is, that's a cell phone it is sitting on.

Sidenote: I showed my family what I made and my nephew (21 months) was carrying it around hugging it, rubbing it on his face, loving on it. He called it a "babyyyyyy". Too cute!! Makes me think if I made the string more attached to the doll (final glue coating I guess) then I could give these to some kids.

Yay! First official post of something I made!
2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Best finishing spray for wood projects? on: December 08, 2007 08:14:11 PM
I got these toy wood kits at my local craft store and am making them for my nephew for Christmas. (ie truck, car, airplane, wagon, boat...). The thing is, the paint is water-based so I need to put a finishing coat of spray or whatever on it. I want to make sure it is something that isn't going to be extremely toxic so if my nephew (2 years old) decides to put them in his mouth, it won't be bad. I went and checked out the selection at the shop, but I have no idea what I was looking at. There was way too much to choose from for someone who doesn't know anything in this field of craft. Gloss, Matte, I have no idea what I want/should get.

So my question is, what is the best type of final coat spray should I get for these wood projects?

Thanks in advance for all your help!
